Anna & Desh at St Mary & St Boniface Cathedral & The Royal William Yard

wedding photography tunnels at the royal william yardAnna & Desh’s (actually Andrew but who are we to argue with a nickname!) sunny October wedding was just so much fun.  Anna slightly overran at the hairdressers in the morning – well she had warned me that timekeeping wasn’t her strong point 🙂 – but it really didn’t matter because I got time to chat with the Tuk Tuk driver!  Meanwhile Robb met up with Desh and the boys at the Cathedral (ok pub first!) for some photos.  Anna wanted to keep everything very relaxed & reportage and we were happy to oblige. (more…)

Lucy & Mark at St Mary Immaculate Falmouth & The Rose In Vale at St Agnes

Lucy & Mark’s wedding was just so much FUN!  I met up with Lucy and her family at the gorgeous Rose-in-Vale Country House Hotel in St Agnes for some bridal prep pictures, while Robb headed off to the church in Falmouth to meet the boys.  Yes the traffic gave us some nervous moments (one side of Cornwall to the other and back again…in high season…we’ll never make it on time…!) but it all ran like clockwork.

Lucy looked absolutely stunning and her colour scheme of delicate pink was just so pretty.  Full marks to Simone Kynita too who did an amazing job on the girls hair.  Over in Falmouth the boys were on top form, larking about and not looking at all nervous! The ceremony was lovely, and once back at the Rose-in-Vale the speeches were absolutely hilarious. It might not have been entirely intentional(!) but Lucy’s Dad’s speech was possibly the funniest we’ve ever heard 🙂  The evening carried on with some amazing music from Plymouth band ‘The Sound’, and we left everyone enjoying the dancefloor.

Thank you for letting us capture and share your special day. We hope looking back on these pictures brings back wonderful memories for you 🙂

Sanita & Omar at The Carbis Bay Hotel – Cornwall Wedding Photography

Sanita & Omar chose the gorgeous setting of Carbis Bay for their early Spring wedding, even though they’d never visited Cornwall before!  The whole day was an enormous party for family & friends, most of whom had travelled from Birmingham but some had come from as far as the USA to be with them.  The day started with traditional bridal preparations for Sanita, while brave Omar ran the gauntlet of Sanita’s female relatives in a traditional ‘barting for the bride’ ceremony at the hotel door!  The day was a real mixture of cultures and it was fun from start to finish, but possibly the most amusing part of the day was watching the usually land-locked bridesmaids run into the sea, shriek “its freezing!” and run back up the beach 🙂

Later on, after the traditional English wedding part of the day was over, everyone changed into their Asian wedding clothes and looked absolutely fabulous!  Sanita (completely radiant in her red sari) and Omar were ‘drummed’ onto the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife.  An amazing dance party carried on – so much energy after such a long day!  The day ended with a fantastic fireworks display over Carbis Bay Beach.  Rain really didn’t stop play for this wedding at all, and we wish you both all the love and luck in the world for a fantastic future together 🙂

Vania & Simon at Dartington Hall – Devon Wedding Photographer

On a rather grey-with-the-promise-of-blue-sky day in March, I arrived at the gorgeous Dartington Hall in Devon for Vania & Simon’s wedding.  Vania only wanted a small amount of photography, so I joined them just before the ceremony.  Its always great to photograph couples with a fun sense of humour, and Vania & Simon have exactly that, cue giggling throughout!

We dodged the rain to take some photos in the stunning gardens.  We had exclusive use and it was a bit wet underfoot, but full marks to the heroic wedding planner who managed to wield an umbrella, hold Vania’a dress off the ground and hide herself in the pictures all at once!  And hooray!! the rain stopped and the sun came out.

Entering into the spirit of the medieval hall, special mention has to go to Vania’s dad who actually made the medieval ‘beer & photo booth’ himself!  And so I left them partying on 🙂  It was an absolute pleasure to share a very tiny part of their special day. Huge congratulations to them both x

Nikki & Tom at St Ive Church and Lanhydrock Hotel & Golf Club

Nikki and Tom’s beautiful wedding was one of those days that makes you happy to be a wedding photographer.  The day started at Nikki’s parents home with plenty of bubbly on hand, and the boys met up at the St Ive Church, with handy copies of ‘Farmers Weekly‘ to keep them occupied until Nikki arrived.  I should explain that they are young farmers!  A special mention must go to everyone who decorated the church the previous day – Nikki, the Mums, the friends and everyone else who helped.  It really did look amazing.

After the slightly quirky ceremony (vicar’s first wedding?!) I hopped in the Range Rover with Nikki & Tom for a quick detour en route to the reception.  Nikki wanted to include her beloved horse in the day and had arranged for him to be at Respryn Woods.  He was so well behaved – a quick attempt at eating Nikki’s bouquet was made and thwarted! – and Nikki couldn’t resist getting on for some photos.  Its rare that your bride wants to ride a beautiful white horse on her wedding day so thank you Nikki!

So we were running a little late by the time we reached Lanhydrock Hotel.  Tom made a beeline for his beloved tractor(!) which had been dropped off the day before.  Its probably the largest wedding ‘prop’ we’ve ever encountered 🙂 Some quick photos outside and a speedy trip to the lake in the golf buggies couldn’t be missed though.  The view at Lanhydrock is breathtaking and with weather like that we couldn’t ignore it.  Not hard to see why its one of our favourite Cornish venues.

The cake was suitably themed – Tom is a dairy farmer after all – and the speeches were genuinely hilarious.  Its not often that we’re laughing as much as the guests, but this time we really were!  More guests arrived for the evening, more food was piled up for the buffet, and Nikki eventually coaxed Tom onto the dancefloor for their first dance.  And when Nikki danced with her Dad afterwards there wasn’t a dry eye around.

It really was a fabulous day from start to finish, and we were happy bunnies when we drove away!  Nikki & Tom we wish you all the luck in the world for a wonderful future together x

Carol & Adrian at The Carbis Bay Hotel, St Ives

Carol chose a breezy blue and white theme for her wedding to Adrian at The Carbis Bay Hotel. At our first meeting they explained how much they wanted their whole wedding to be relaxed and laid-back, no posed photography and a sort of beach party for their family & friends. They certainly achieved it! We might be the hotel’s recommended wedding photographer (and we do photograph Carbis Bay a lot!) but we never tire of it. Beautiful blue skies on the day helped and Carbis Bay Beach was as stunning as ever. We love how much the sea tempts guests to run into it!

Emotions were running high for Carol during the ceremony as soon as she saw Adrian waiting for her, but happy tears are very much a part of weddings and perfectly ok.  Adrian just beamed from ear to ear all day!

There were beach games, digging in the sand & even swimming for some of the children.  The grown-ups all had a go at playing cricket, no idea how the score went but we reckon they were probably all winners!  Even the wedding cake joined in with the beach theme – the deckchair topper was fab 🙂  The speeches were emotional, the disco rocked (Carol’s boys saw to that with their impromptu dance off!) and the fireworks were a perfect ending to a perfect day.

It was such a pleasure to be part of Carol & Adrian’s special day. We wish them many more years of love & happiness 🙂

Clare & Carl at The Guildhall St Ives & Porthminster Beach (with a mermaid!)

Claire & Carl’s sunny St Ives wedding was a lovely laid-back affair.  They chose The Guildhall in St Ives for their ceremony, which was attended by just a handful of close family.  After the short but emotional ceremony we headed of to Porthminster Beach for some photos, with a rather special surprise on the way for their daughter.  Claire & Carl had arranged for the St Ives Mermaid to put in an appearance, much to the delight of the whole wedding party and surrounding tourists!  She posed for a lot of photos (not just ours!) and presented the rather awe-struck little girl with her very own mermaid.

Porthminster Beach was busy – as you’d expect on a lovely sunny day – so we headed to a quieter spot for some photos.  The children had a great time racing around and I think the grown-ups had just as much fun! Claire & Carl wanted to keep the whole wedding casual so my time with them was short but lovely. Its a wonderful perk of being a wedding photographer in Cornwall to be involved in so many different types of wedding celebrations! I left the family enjoying some beach time before their party continued at a restaurant in the evening.

A lovely day for a lovely little family. Best wishes to you all for a continued happy future 🙂

Raw Files vs Jpeg?

I’ve heard about wedding photographers shooting in ‘Raw’. What does this mean and can I get these ‘Raw’ images? This is something that wedding photographers get asked quite a lot!

You may have heard the term ‘raw’ being discussed by friends with cameras. You may even have read in a wedding magazine that you should ask for the ‘raw’ files because you might need them. But what exactly are they?

A raw digital file is the modern equivalent of an old-fashioned negative.  Unprocessed and unfinished.  When a digital camera takes a picture, the light captured by the sensor needs to be translated into something that can be easily viewed on your phone or computer etc.  The most user-friendly format is JPEG.  A camera that puts a jpeg image directly onto a memory card is actually doing the ‘processing’ such as applying colour temperature, exposure compensation, contrast, colour corrections etc.  A professional photographer doesn’t rely on the camera to automatically make these decisions, and a jpeg will actually discard a lot of information captured by the sensor.

So professional photographers tell the camera to store the actual data from the sensor in a format called Raw. This ‘Raw’ file is exactly that – RAW. There is no editing done at all. It’s just a copy of what the sensor recorded.

This means that all the processing now needs to be done later by the photographer.  But its ok – we’re professionals!  It’s a lot of work, and a lot of digital storage is needed because raw files are massive, but it’s essential to the individual style and workflow of professional photographers.

The photographer will then manually edit each raw file using specialist software (we have mad skills!) and finish off the creative process that began when they visualised the image and pressed the shutter.  The end result is a high quality JPEG that can easily be printed and shared by the bride & groom.

So, do we give away these unprocessed and unfinished RAW images?  The short answer is no.  They are literally our raw material, and you wouldn’t ask a painter for their brushes and tubes of paint would you?  Our wonderful couples choose us because of our style and hire us to provide a full professional service – our vision of how their wedding should look.   Fully edited and with our signature Iconik style & polish!
