Wedding Etiquette – Buttonholes & How to wear them

Peak wedding season will be here again before we know it. And with it comes all those inevitable questions for cornwall wedding photographers such as: “Is your camera heavy?”, “Do you actually like weddings?” and, probably the most popular question of all, “Where does this go?”, as the Groom/Best Man/Aunt waves a buttonhole under our nose.

Well the short answer to the first two questions is “Yes!”. The third needs a little more attention.

So who exactly wears a buttonhole? Or boutonnières as they are sometimes referred to.

2018 Highlights

Well Christmas is over, New Year’s Eve celebrations have been fully recovered from (although I’m not sure we could cope with too many parties ’til 3am!!) and we’ve finally had the chance to sit down and look through a handful of our beautiful 2018 weddings.

What an incredible year we had! We worked at some stunning venues – Ravello in Italy, St Ives, Carbis Bay, Pentillie Castle, Lanhydrock, Woolacombe, Polhawn Fort, Carlyon Bay & Bovey Castle to name just a few. We photographed farmers & F1! We did family photoshoots for past wedding customers and engagement shoots for future ones. We had some wonderful commercial shoots, made a lot of new friends in the wedding industry and it was great to work with each and every one of them 🙂

So here are a few of our favourites from a few of our weddings. It was a complete honour to be involved in all these special days, and thanks to all the amazing brides & grooms who put their faith in us. Your kind words about us are the biggest buzz we could ever get!

Wedding Etiquette – Who Sits Where in Church?

cornwall wedding photographer

You’ve spent hours working out the reception seating plan (“We can’t put Cousin Fred next to Vera-from-work. He shoots pheasants for fun and she’s a strict vegan…”) but no one ever mentioned the church.  At least, not until the rehearsal, when one of the ushers asked exactly what they had to do.  Um, give out orders of service and show people to their seats.  And um…

It’s probably better to work it all out in advance and hopefully this wedding photographers guide to wedding ceremony seating will help!

So who sits where? (more…)

Tom & Lydia at The Carbis Bay Hotel

carbis bay beach wedding
A slightly windswept Bride & Groom on Carbis Bay Beach!

Our very last wedding of 2017, a tiny occasion with just Tom, Lydia, their two guests and their beautiful baby!  The days between Christmas and New Year can be a bit dull even in beautiful Cornwall (collapsing on the sofa with a box of choccies can sometimes lose its charm…) so I was super pleased when Tom booked me for their wedding.  Everything was casual, the Carbis Bay Hotel looked beautifully Christmassy and even the weather behaved itself.  Bit of a fresh breeze(!) and the sea was having a tantrum, but Tom & Lydia were happy to brave the beach!  We wish them every happiness for a fabulous future 🙂 (more…)

Tanya & Andy at The Carbis Bay Hotel

Another gorgeous Carbis Bay Hotel wedding. This time at the end of a very busy summer season, when the hotel and beach were full of holiday makers enjoying the spectacular surroundings. It’s a definite perk of being recommended wedding photographer at the Carbis Bay Hotel that we get to see the bay in all its glory throughout the year.

Kate & Paddy at St Mary the Virgin, Walkhampton & EverAfter at Grenofen

romantic wedding photos in the Dartmoor rainSo much fun, is how we’d describe Kate & Paddy’s gorgeous day at Ever After on Dartmoor!  It is the most beautiful venue with amazing photo opportunities everywhere.  In fact we had real trouble deciding which images to blog!

Kate has to be one of the most serene and chilled out brides we’ve ever photographed.  The day dawned bright & sunny and we ignored the rain forecast for later.  Robb headed off to the church and I hopped on the bus with bridesmaids and guests.  Full credit to the choir too, who sang Adele’s ‘make you feel my love’ beautifully during the signing of the register. Carina & Kev at St Dominic Parish Church & Pentillie Castle

wedding photography at pentillie castleEvery now and again we photograph a wedding that has to be described as epic!  Carina & Kev’s fabulous summer day at Pentillie Castle was amazing from start to finish. Carina brought her beloved vintage VW Beetle and Camper as props for the day and was decorating them when we arrived. I must confess to being jealous here as I’ve always really want a classic VW! The marquee looked fantastic and Carina’s summery colour scheme of bright sunflowers and berry shades with lace on the chiavari chairs looked so pretty. The country theme continued with the table decorations of tiny green wellies and feathers, with each table being named after a gunmaker. (more…)

Anna & Desh at St Mary & St Boniface Cathedral & The Royal William Yard

wedding photography tunnels at the royal william yardAnna & Desh’s (actually Andrew but who are we to argue with a nickname!) sunny October wedding was just so much fun.  Anna slightly overran at the hairdressers in the morning – well she had warned me that timekeeping wasn’t her strong point 🙂 – but it really didn’t matter because I got time to chat with the Tuk Tuk driver!  Meanwhile Robb met up with Desh and the boys at the Cathedral (ok pub first!) for some photos.  Anna wanted to keep everything very relaxed & reportage and we were happy to oblige. Carol & Adrian at The Carbis Bay Hotel, St Ives

Carol chose a breezy blue and white theme for her wedding to Adrian at The Carbis Bay Hotel. At our first meeting they explained how much they wanted their whole wedding to be relaxed and laid-back, no posed photography and a sort of beach party for their family & friends. They certainly achieved it! We might be the hotel’s recommended wedding photographer (and we do photograph Carbis Bay a lot!) but we never tire of it. Beautiful blue skies on the day helped and Carbis Bay Beach was as stunning as ever. We love how much the sea tempts guests to run into it!

Emotions were running high for Carol during the ceremony as soon as she saw Adrian waiting for her, but happy tears are very much a part of weddings and perfectly ok.  Adrian just beamed from ear to ear all day!

There were beach games, digging in the sand & even swimming for some of the children.  The grown-ups all had a go at playing cricket, no idea how the score went but we reckon they were probably all winners!  Even the wedding cake joined in with the beach theme – the deckchair topper was fab 🙂  The speeches were emotional, the disco rocked (Carol’s boys saw to that with their impromptu dance off!) and the fireworks were a perfect ending to a perfect day.

It was such a pleasure to be part of Carol & Adrian’s special day. We wish them many more years of love & happiness 🙂
